Our TV region (Granada) is getting ready to switch over to digital. Here, we go over what this means to you, and what you’ll need to do to be sure your home is ready.

When will the switch happen?

The switchover starts on Wednesday 4 November, and will be completed by Wednesday 2 December.

How to go digital

There are four ways to go digital. The easiest is through your existing aerial and a set-top digibox – this is Freeview. However, if you have problems with your aerial already, it’s likely that you’ll need to change this. If you live in a flat, your aerial is communal and has already been sorted by our engineers. To check the condition of your aerial visit Teletext page 284. You can also go digital by signing up to one of the three big suppliers: BT Vision, Sky or Virgin Media.

Do I need to change my TV?

Nearly every TV set (even black and white ones) can be converted to work with a digital signal. It’s not the aerial or TV that is digital. However, most new TVs are digital-ready. This just means that the digibox is a part of the TV set and you won’t need to buy a set-top digibox.

What if I need a new aerial?

If you do need a new aerial for Freeview, you can search for a Registered Digital Installer (RDI) on the rd-lb website. But watch out for rogue traders!  If you’re looking elsewhere, you need to make sure that your installer is accredited with the tick logo or is a member of Confederation of Aerial Industries Limited (CAI Plus) or The Independent Digital Standards Commission (IDSC).

What if I have more than one TV?

If your digital signal is provided through BT, Virgin or Sky, you can buy a multi-room package. Or you can buy a digibox for each television. What about my video and DVD recorders?

Analogue video and DVD recorders will only be able to record the same digital channel you are watching. You’ll need a twin tuner digital TV recorder to record one digital channel while watching another. These digital-ready products should bear the digital tick logo.

Can I get help?

If you’re 75 or over, registered blind, severely disabled or receive certain benefits you can get help from the Switchover Help Scheme. This costs £40, although for some, it’s free.
